Home composting with Bio Sanitizer
[This is part of the dialogue happening in the past two months about giving wider support to decentralized waste management techniques]
Method indicated by Janak Daftary below to compost your wet waste at home for a family of 4-5.
The loading assumed for the calculations below is on the basis of 1 family generating approx. 2 kgs of waste everyday.
Since there are some costs associated with the bio sanitizer the model below takes into account 10 people who are staying in the vicinity of each other or can coordinate well in spite of distance.
Basic ingredients and Costs -
|
S No. |
Ingredient |
Cost |
|
1 |
Earthen pot / container | Rs. 100-200 |
|
2 |
Soil Bed | Good quality mud or conditioned soil available after composting (available at Green Cross Society) |
|
3 |
Some neem leaves, coconut shards, cow dung cake. | Nominal |
|
4 |
Vermi ++ – Active Bio sanitizer ingredient. This will be a small quantity which will be put into every plot, which facilitates the composting | Rs. 400 per pot |
|
5 |
Bio Sanitized water, which has to sprayed on top of the wet waste after every loading.
One packet of Bio sanitizer can give active water for lifetime and the packet currently costs Rs 10,000/- Since cost maybe considered expensive hence the idea is for ten people to invest in the same and then share the water. |
Rs. 10,000/- |
First prepare a soil bed with the fresh mud or soil conditioner. This bed should be around 2 inches thick. Into this is to be added the Vermi ++. Then spread the neem leaves, cow dung and chard’s of coconut.
Then sprinkle a good quantity of the bio sanitized water and the pot is ready to accept all kinds of wet household waste, vegetable peels, left over food, bones, other non-vegetarian waste, etc.
As regards the bio sanitized water one person will have to take the responsibility of keeping a tank which will contain the pouch and then the others can collect the water in 1/1.5 liter bottles periodically.
After each loading of waste the bio sanitized water should be sprinkled. The active culture in the soil bed along with the bio sanitized water will act on the waste to convert it into compost. After 3-4 months the first batch of compost should be ready to harvest.
